A complicated Speeding ticket….?
Hello!
Please only answer if you know this!
I am a NJ driver and got a speeding ticket in NY 28 MPH over the limit.
It was a rental car that was on my Mom's name...Mom was not with me...I dont know why the Police Officer Noticed it..but anyhow, NY state gave me 6 points..and I paid all the fines....
The questions are:
1. How many points will transfer to NJ (my home town)
2. What will happen to insurance...as it was a rental car on mom's name >> ticket was issued on my License >> and I personally do not have any insurance on any car....
I am so confused....anybody??
Please help....
Thanks Geogia Peach, Trooper And SPF....I really appricate ur answers....
Trooper...I am not on my mom's policy....So what is going to happen? She just rented the car, that I was driving. How would the insurance affect if I am not on her policy and ticket was even not on her License..?....
and SPF...you know...it was 4th July....and Police officer said....she wont arrest me for driving the Mom's rented car....so there should be no arguements...as the Officer let me go...right?....

Not complicated at all. A speeding ticket goes to the driver, not the car. It will appear on your personal driving record.
NY and NJ are members of the Drivers license compact, so points will be assessed. The NJ DMV will be able to advise how many.
You may not have insurance now, but if you are on your mom’s policy, and the insurance company discovers the conviction, her insurance will go up. When you do get your own policy, they will run a check on you and see the violation.

i don’t really know about the law in NJ but here in Ca, if you get that kind of points, your insurance will shoot up. and you have 2 violations left before your driver’s license get suspended.
good luck talking to your mom about it.

Unfortunately yes. Even though you are a New Jersey driver, you can still acquire points and penalties for violations committed in other states. New Jersey is a member of two compacts that enforce this policy.
You can checkout this website for more info. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/violations.com
EDIT:The Driver License Compact
Consists of 45 states and the District of Columbia. States not included are Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin
Members in this compact exchange all violation information. Out-of-state moving violations are worth two points. For example, if you receive a speeding ticket in Florida, you will get two points on your New Jersey driving record for that violation

The ticket will follow you and you only.. not your mother… and will follow you to NJ all the points that go along with the 28 mph over the speed limit… the inc. follows the car and not the driver in most states just be glad your mother had inc. but the car or rental place may fight this due to the fact you are not a driver on the account, but… it was just a speeding ticket… hope that helps

Here’s the NJ point structure for speeding..
39:4–98 Exceeding maximum speed 1-14 mph over limit
2
Exceeding maximum speed 15-29 mph over limit
4
Exceeding maximum speed 30 mph or more over limit
5
You just missed 5 points
