NJ speeding ticket – will it hurt me to reschedule a court appearance?
I want to appear in court even though I am accepting responsibility because I want to at least try to protect my insurance, even if it means increased fines. I am 21 and have no previous violations. This violation is worth up to 4 points, for going 26 over the limit in a 35 zone. I plan to invest in a Defensive Driving Course approved by the state for – successful completion of it erases 2 points. Should I do this as soon as possible, or wait until after the court date?
I want to reschedule to about 40 days later, however, so I may avoid missing college classes. Do you think that is an acceptable reason to try to reschedule, and could it hurt my chances of the same outcome I would get if I went on my initial, unrequired appearance time? I already checked and they only hold court one day a week for this, so bringing it to mid-May would be only way for insuring missing no classes. Is there a chance rescheduling the initial date could essentially piss off officer and/or judge?

Your best bet is to contact the courts and ask them these questions. They are the ones who will process your ticket and will know all the laws and regulation. You should also ask the courts if you are allowed to take a driving school class. This will prevent your insurance from going up and points from being placed on your license. Just make sure you get the courts permission before doing so. If you don’t the courts will reject your driving school certificate. Good luck!
